What is Oral Pathology?

Oral pathology is the study and diagnosis of abnormal conditions in the mouth, jaw, and surrounding tissues. This includes unexplained lesions, lumps, chronic sores, or changes in the color or texture of the tissues. Most abnormalities turn out to be harmless—but some require closer evaluation to rule out infection, autoimmune disorders, or even oral cancer.

If your dentist referred you or you’ve noticed something unusual yourself, we’ll evaluate the area thoroughly and talk you through every step.

When to get an evaluation

Early detection is key, and the signs aren’t always painful. If you’ve noticed any of the following for more than two weeks, it’s time to schedule a consult:

  • Persistent sores or ulcers that don’t heal
  • Red, white, or dark patches in the mouth
  • Lumps or thickened tissue
  • Pain or numbness in the mouth or lips
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking
  • Changes in the way your teeth fit together

When in doubt, we can help.

Oral cancer is less common than cavities or gum disease, but early detection is critical. We always take a cautious, thorough approach.

Most biopsies are done under local anesthesia and feel similar to a routine dental procedure. Some soreness afterward is normal and manageable.

Most biopsy results return within 7–10 business days. We’ll call you as soon as we receive them and talk through everything.

We understand, taking the first step and getting a consultation is nerve-wracking. It’s normal to feel anxious, but most lesions are benign. Our goal is to get you answers quickly—and we will be by your side either way.
